the Pits

"Pits" are people who grow their own plants from the pits of food plants: avocados, oranges and lemons, litchis and mangoes.

You can end up with some very attractive plants costing next-to-nothing, and you have an excuse (if you need one) for eating a lot more of delicious fruit.

Pit growing is fun and easy. If growing orchids is the "grand opera" of horticulture, then pit growing is like singing in the shower. Anyone can do it ad no one is permitted to criticize your performance.

The Pits began as a social group in New York City in 1975, meeting in each others apartments to compare notes. Then we started putting out a newsletter, to spread the Pits gospel far and wide, reaching over 1,250 subscribers in 8 countries. And now we're on the World Wide Web, reaching out to everyone, everywhere.

We are planning to publish a newsletter for the four seasons of the year. Spring 2009 is the last print issue.

Your staff:
Debbie Peterson (deb@pitplants.com): Editor
Chris Carrdus (chris@pitplants.com): Recipe, reviews and puzzles and general bon vivant.
Dr. John Hart (doc@pitplants.com): Deb's husband's nom de plume, medical, chemical and scientific - bon vivant.

Most people buy the tree to eat the fruit.
We buy the fruit to grow the tree.
